Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook has called on the EU to develop new regulations for tech companies and the way in which they interact with the internet.
At the start of the week Zuckerberg took part in a video debate with Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market.
During which he said that it was “increasingly clear” that tech giants like Facebook shouldn’t be given free rein on what content is allowed on the internet and “there needs to be some more independent governance around that” and “we have a joint responsibility to help develop this.
He then pointed to countries like China where without such governance, the government has a large input in how such measures are handled, which he sees as “really dangerous”.
The solution he says would be the west to create a “clear regulatory framework” which “we can show works well” to put forward as an alternative model.

“Just to be blunt about it, I think there is a model coming out of countries like China that tend to have very different values than Western countries that are more democratic,” said Zuckerburg.
Zuckerberg hinted that internet regulation would become inevitable but that it was important that western societies take the lead in this, through a collaboration between government and industry.
“I don’t think that there’s a question that there’s going to be regulation,” he added. “I think the question is, whose framework is going to win around the world?”
Breton who has historically been critical of IT hyperscalers like Facebook, agreed with Zuckerberg’s points adding that:
“I think that’s something that’s extremely important, is our ability to work together to design together, the right government tools, and behaviour,” he said.
“I think we should understand that, especially for the digital market. And more than that, for the information society at large.”
